New Pruning Techniques

Wineries love to focus on and feature their old vines. They look beautiful in the vineyard and are believed to give wines a greater intensity of flavors. The problem is that old wood is hard to maintain. So many wineries work with them as long as they can and then have to send them to that big grapevine vineyard in the sky.

One of the most interesting approaches to maintaining old vines is trying to get them to shot off younger stalks. The folks at Cakebread in Napa are working on it. The preliminary trials look great. The winery is just at the beginning, but it an exciting foray as it may give old vines new life.

If you don’t care about new vineyard technology the winery also has a great culinary program.
