New poll finds most Americans feel the economic system is unfair

There has never been a wider gap between the wealthy and the poor in the United States. The poor are hurting more than ever and do not generally see their plight as being due to the fact that the wealthy are supposedly
more intelligent and capable than they are. In fact a new Pew-USA Today survey has found 60 percent of people in the United States say the economic system unfairly favors the wealthy, reported Money News on Jan. 24, 2014.

According to this survey from Pew Research Center and USA Today a majority of Americans see a basic injustice inherent within our economic system. Out of the 1,504 adults surveyed from Jan. 15 through 19, 60 percent believe that the economic system unfairly favors the wealthy. And although 60 percent of the respondents feel that people who want to get ahead can succeed if they are willing to work hard, 38 percent say hard work can not guarantee success. When asked what is more important in explaining why people are wealthy, 51 percent said having more advantages than others, while 38 percent said working harder than others.

More than two-thirds of Americans believe the gap between the rich and poor has widened over the past decade, reports The Christian Science Monitor. There has been an anticipated partisan split over what, if anything, the government should do about this serious situation. A large majority of Democrats, 90 percent, say the government should be doing more, while about half of Republicans say it should do very little, or even nothing at all, according to a survey by Pew Research/USA Today. The bottom line is there have never been more Americans suffering in poverty while a select few become wealthier than ever, and something should be done about this tragedy.
