New poll: Americans trust President Obama more on taxes and the middle class

The biggest issue heading into the 2012 Presidential election is the economy and protecting the middle class. After nearly thirty years of Reaganomics, which has broken down the financial structure of the United States and stripped the middle class down to its bare bone, Americans don't seem to want to take it anymore. The idea in the early 1980s was that if you gave tax breaks to the wealthy they would take the extra money earned and create jobs. The problem is that, while it looks good on paper, it doesn't translate in reality. People by nature are greedy, whether it's a little child wanting the cookies all for themselves or the banker on wall street who wants to keep his tax break, people often want to keep what they have. Now of course this doesn't apply to everyone, there are millions around the word who are generous to a fault at times and we should be thankful that people like that exist.

What Americans have seen over the years are broken promises that the wealth will "trickle down" and be spread down to all other Americans. As the years went on the people at the top of the economic ladder became more wealthy while the middle class struggled. When President Clinton handed President Bush a surplus in 2001, President Bush decided to give away the surplus in the form of tax cuts that primarily benefited the wealthy. After going to war in two countries in addition to creating the Medicare part D program, that wasn't funded, America started to struggle again. The housing market crumbled due to bad loans made by the banks, who themselves crumbled. The US government spent over $700 billion in taxpayer money to bail out the banks and by the time President Obama took office in January of 2009, the United States was losing over 750,000 jobs a month. Fast forward three years and the country is creating over 200,000 jobs a month, 23 straight months of private sector job growth and has an unemployment rate that is falling faster in six months than it has in 27 years.

With the current economy moving slowly in the right direction, Americans have a choice to make in November and the economy will be at the top of their list. Despite all the mud-slinging by Republican candidates during the primary, a recent Washington Post/ABC poll shows that the majority of Americans trust President Obama more than the GOP front-runner, Mitt Romney, when it comes to protecting the middle class. 56% of all Americans surveyed trust President Obama more with handling the middle class compared to only 37% of Americans who trust the former CEO of Bain Capital. The survey also shows that President Obama is leading Mitt Romney in other categories such as terrorism, taxes and international affairs.

The economy in the United States is hurting, millions are without work, even more don't have health insurance. America has a long way to go before people can wake up and feel confident that the country is doing well, but the majority of Americans finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. The disaster that President Obama walked into was something that hadn't been seen since President Franklin Roosevelt walked into the White House in 1933 following twelve years of Republican presidents. President Obama has had to deal with a filibuster-proof House of Representatives and a Senate that includes Republicans who won't budge and any issue. If one thing is for certain, it's that if Americans know their history they won't let it repeat itself.
