New Poll: Americans care about the economy, not social issues

Over the last few weeks, Republicans  shifted from the economy and jobs and have focused on social issues, like abortion and same-sex marriage. Whether it's dealing with contraception within Catholic run companies or legalizing same-sex marriage, Republicans decided to turned to their base to defend their conservative views on these issues. The reason Republicans have tried to move away from the economy is because it's moving in the right direction, and that is bad news for the Republican party. With an unemployment rate that has dropped for five straight months, and over 3 millions jobs being created in 23 straight months, Americans are starting to see the economy being corrected. While Republicans have tried to put the focus on social issues, Americans are not buying it.

According to a new poll from pollposition.com, an overwhelming amount of Americans still believe that the economy is the most important issue leading up to the 2012 elections in November. 75% of all Americans listed the economy as the number one issue compared to 13% who said it was health care. 3% of all Americans said terrorism was the biggest issue and another 3% simply said Iran. There were 6% who said: "some other issue" which could have been a social issue, but it wasn't listed. The last 2% expressed no opinion. Democrats and Republicans can never seem to agree on anything these days, but according to the new poll they were able to come together this time. 78% of Democrats and 74% of Republicans all listed the economy as the most important issue while 72% expressed the same sentiment.

The economy and getting Americans back to work is still the most important issue in our country. If history does repeat itself, Republicans in congress will do whatever they can over the next ten months to block any potential jobs plan that can improve the economy. Even with a record filibuster, President Obama has been able to get through some of his legislation and has put the country on the right track. If it continues at the pace it's going, it could only be good news for President Obama and his re-election.
