It would seem that Nintendo’s Pokémon franchise is as popular as ever. With Pokémon X/Y due to release for Nintendo 3DS on Oct. 12, gamers will soon be asked to catch them all once again. On Sept. 19, new information concerning Pokémon X/Y was shared via Twitter along with new pre-order figures for the hotly anticipated 3DS release.
While speaking with Mashable on Sept. 20, Junichi Masuda, Director of Pokémon X/Y, shared new details on how the game will use the 3DS StreetPass feature and how the Mega Evolution concept came to be. In terms of StreetPass functionality, Pokémon X/Y will have two uses. One of the features the company has not yet announced, meanwhile the second is the Player Search System which will show you nearby players that you can battle or trade with.
“There are two types of things that use streetpass technology. One is a feature we aren't ready to announce yet. The other is the Player Search System, which appears on the bottom screen of the 3DS. Nearby players will appear on the bottom of the screen, and you can tap them to battle them or trade using the streetpass technology. You can connect to the Internet and get a similar experience from players from around the world,” Masuda told Mashable.
As for the concept of a Mega Evolution, Masuda had this to say.
"We knew we didn't want to do another stage of evolution, for the battle balance, and to keep the balance intact. We came up with the idea that in order to trigger this mega evolution, which would only happen in battle, we would need the Pokémon to hold a megastone. What that does is it prevents the Pokémon from holding another item. If you want to mega evolve, you can't have another benefit. It makes the battles a lot deeper. There's a lot of strategy as you try to read your opponent."
According to Junichi Masuda, Pokémon X/Y has achieved a pre-order milestone. Masuda shared on Twitter that Pokémon X/Y has achieved over 1 million pre-orders – though it is unclear if he is referring to Japan exclusively or worldwide pre-order figures.
Along with the impressive statistic of 1 million pre-orders, the official TV commercial of Pokémon X/Y has begun to air in North America. If you have not yet caught the ad running TV, fret not, for you can watch it in its entirety here.
