Many animal lovers are against puppies being sold in stores because they are often associated with puppy mill breeders. According to WNWO on October 5, a group of animal advocates is picketing a new pet store that is scheduled to open in a Toledo mall this month. The store owners, who already own five other stores in southeast Michigan, claim that people looking for puppies should have options other than adopting from an animal shelter.
Animal shelters are but one source to find a new dog or puppy for your family. There are countless animal rescue organizations in every community nationwide -- some catering to specific breeds -- and someone who wants a purebred, registered dog could also seek out and visit a breeder themselves.
No one should bring a pet into their family without careful thought and preparation. Going shopping for clothes at the mall and coming home with a puppy you couldn’t resist is generally a bad idea. Pets are a lifelong commitment and not a purchase that should be made on the spur of the moment like a purse or pair of shoes that you can give away if they don’t fit or styles change.
The Family Puppy is counting on being upfront and visible to mall shoppers who won’t be able to resist that cute doggie in the window. The people of Toledo are demonstrating outside of the Westfield Franklin Park Mall to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves.
