Forbes Magazine reveals that New Orleans, Louisiana will be the hardest city to find work in 2011 according to a study by www.indeed.com which put New Orleans at the very top of this list.
The data used to compile the list of cities where jobs are the hardest to come by came from statistics obtained from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics from the fourth quarter of last year. The rankings were calculated by the population in each city and the number of job postings with annual salaries of over $50,000. The report showed that New Orleans had only 10 job postings per 1,000 in population from October 2010 through December 2010.
The reason cited for the poor rating according to Paul Forster, Chief Executive Officer and Cofounder of Indeed.com, was that the crescent city had not fully recovered from Hurricane Katrina and tourism also did not bounce back to the normal pre-Katrina level.
The findings do seem to be accurate as tourism took a big hit in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. Known for its Cajun cuisine, Mardi Gras, the French Quarter and early history, New Orleans has seen a big decline in the tourist industry in the last couple of years.
Also on the list and tying for the second spot on the list of cities where jobs are the hardest to find were Buffalo, New York and Rochester, New York with 11 job postings per 1,000 in population during the same time period. Miami, Florida followed with 14 job postings per 1,000 in population and Riverside, California and Louisville, Kentucky rounding out the top five with 16 job postings per 1,000 in population.
Forster expects the job market to improve with more jobs being posted online at the beginning of 2011. However, that is little condolence for those currently out of work and looking for jobs that are needed immediately.
