The New Orleans Saints have not had a great time during the new free agency season so far. Through two full days, the Saints have lost a number of players and have yet to sign or agree to terms with anyone new. As of Thursday, March 14, 2013, the Saints have seen big names walk, but they've also got their eyes on a few as well.
New Orleans is looking to desperately improve the secondary, and they unfortunately lost out on a chance on Thursday morning. Cornerback Derek Cox was in the Saints sights, but ended up signing with the San Diego Chargers late on Wednesday night. Cox was set to visit the Saints on Thursday evening.
The Saints still have two other great possibilities to improve the secondary. One is former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Keenan Lewis who is set to visit the team soon. New Orleans still has their eyes on one of the biggest free agent prizes this season and that is former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.
So far, the Saints have seen a number of players head out of the door though:
- QB Chase Daniel signed with the Kansas City Chiefs
- OT Jermon Bushrod signed with the Chicago Bears
- LB Jonathan Casillas signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
A number of current Saints' players have decided to restructure their contracts to help the team save against the salary cap, and those players include Jonathan Vilma and Will Smith. The Saints also released linebacker Will Herring.
