We Houstonians feel very close to the Katrina tragedy. Ask any Houston resident and they will tell you that the New Orleans folks who migrated to our city became a part of Houston and the many who have stayed are now our neighbors and friends, our colleagues and school-mates.
But what about the people who stayed or returned to their homes in Louisiana to rebuild and restore their lives. How are they doing? And how have they been impacted by subsequent disasters like recent flooding, the horrendous gulf spill, not to mention our ailing Economy?
Soledad O’Brien's new documentary, New Orleans Rising, tells us where the citizens are now and how they are faring. Her report focuses on one neighborhood’s efforts to take on its own recovery. The trailer looks very promising. I encourage you to watch this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, August 21st and 22nd. I encourage you to watch as a family. CNN provides a Parent and Teacher Discussion Guide to assist your discussions with your child or your students. We all need to remember our neighbors to the East and how such a devastating disaster can take a long time to overcome. They still need our help.
