"Truces are forsaken and spirits have awakened. The fight is about to begin." American Horror story has created quite the buzz with this season’s new series, American Horror Story: Coven. Of particular interest to New Orleans locals, the series is said to spend much of its time in the Crescent City where Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, a special school for witches, is located. Young girls are being sent to the school so that they can learn to protect themselves from the increased occurrence of mysterious attacks.
American Horror Story: Coven is set against a backdrop of a secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. It has been over three hundred years since the tumultuous days of Salem, Massachusetts, with only a few survivors of a unique bloodline facing complete eradication.
A particular young girl named Zoe is a new arrival to the school and brings with her a terrifying secret of her own. She becomes wrapped up in the chaos, “shattered to discover she possesses a strange genetic affliction tracing back to the dark days of Salem.” Fiona Goode, the most powerful witch of their generation, returns to New Orleans with a secret agenda, stirring up animosities with the Voodoo, the Coven’s deadly enemies.
By far, my favorite lines from previews thus far come from Angela Bassett's character Marie Laveau: "She done messed with the wrong witch...Too late for tears, the damage is done." These lines alone have every lover of New Orleans' own Voodoo Queen sitting on the edge of their seats in anticipation for tomorrow’s premiere.
The cast is compelling: Jessica Lang plays Fiona Goode; Kathy Bates plays Madame La Laurie; Sarah Paulson plays Cordelia Foxx; and the one everyone is waiting to see as Marie Laveau is played by Angela Bassett.
