The San Francisco Wine School is offering the first-of its-kind program and only professional credential program uniquely designed to support the next generation of industry-leading California wine experts. The California Wine Appellation Specialist® is a comprehensive, up-to-date, formal education program, featuring material that is literally impossible to find from other resources. The program is designed for both classroom and online settings.
The program consist of nine weeks of:
- Identification and interpretation of USA and California wine laws
- Discussion of history and impact of California’s American Viticultural Areas (AVAs)
- Detailed investigation of California’s wine production
- Examination of the various climates, soils, grapes, and wineries of each region that make it distinctive to the California wine landscape
There are three options for study of the CWAS®:

- CWAS® 9-Week Credential Program – South San Francisco
Different from other programs, the San Francisco Wine School CWAS® Online 9-Week Credential Program, offers wine professionals access to advance their careers by bringing the classroom to the computer. This comprehensive program is unique in its design and its classroom platform. The San Francisco Wine School Offers the learning experience through an online Learning Management System, a software application, known as Canvas, that administers, documents, tracks, reports and delivers the training program.
This is the first interactive, online wine program with virtual classes focused solely on all the California wine regions. Like a regular classroom the students need to keep up with the time-tracked weekly assignments, wine tastings, and discussions. Weekly quizzes also track a minimum requirement to pass to the next level or next Instructional Module. Indeed, it is like being in a regular classroom. Similar to a classroom, participation is essential, as students also learn from each other through the interactive weekly discussion. Speaking from personal experience…. The weekly interactive discussions get as interesting as the Instructional Sessions, and it stimulates your interest on topics of discussion!
Wine tasting is a also critical element of CWAS® Online 9-Week Credential Program, as program participation includes tasting, or having access to, up to 16 California wines. Students are required to report on two wines per week, through tasting notes and/or videos.
The CWAS® online wine education program is divided into 8 significant and distinctive courses, plus its final exam week, covering detailed and critical information on the wine appellations of California.
CA 01 laws and Mendocino County - This online wine education course exposes students to the fundamental concepts regarding USA/California Law and the diverse appellations of Mendocino County.
CA 02 Napa Valley Rocks! - This online Napa Valley Rocks wine course provides students with an in-depth exploration of the world-famous Napa Valley, its amazing geography, history, climate, and significance within the world of wine.
CA 03 Lake County and The Sierra - Lake County and The Sierra is an online wine education course that acquaints students with the distinctive Lake County region from the high altitude vineyards above one of America’s oldest geothermal lake to the first single winery AVA.
CA 04 Sonoma County - Sonoma County will never accept second place to Napa. Explore the amazing diversity of Napa’s neighbor toward the coast. This dynamic online course will provide students with the background necessary to understand its distinction and reputation in the wine market.
CA 05 Santa Cruz, San Francisco Bay and The Delta - Do not underestimate the importance of these appellations! Learn online about the first elevation based AVA, the source of most California Chardonnay vines and places in between. This online course will help you gain perspective on one of the most unique and natural environments in the world.
CA 06 Monterey and San Benito - Home to the Big Sur’s rugged and distinct coastline, the quaint village of Carmel, and Pebble Beach golf courses, understanding this wine region is a must! In this online wine education course, you will learn about Monterey’s Thermal Rainbow, the Santa Lucia Highlands, and other AVAs.
CA 07 Paso Robles and the rest of San Luis Obispo - This region is essential to professional knowledge and wine education as it is by far the fastest growing region in California, gaining attention for its Zinfandels, Rhone style wines and more. Learn the fundamentals online including: primary grapes, climate, the 11 pending AVAs within Paso Robles, and characteristics and contrasts of Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande.
CA 08 Santa Barbara and Beyond - The last course in the program presents a dynamic overview of this exceptional region that produces of some of the most desired wines of the world. Proximity to the Pacific Ocean, ideal microclimates, and long growing season make a great combination.
CA 09 CWAS® Credential Exam - The CWAS® Credential Exam is a chance to test your knowledge of the wines, regions and laws of California on the CWAS® exam. The CWAS® credential will be awarded to those that pass the rigorous exam at the end of the series with a score of 80% or higher.
