The Nikon S1000pj. A camera with a built in projector.
Nikon has introduced a new camera, the Coolpix S1000pj, with a feature that is either going to be a spectacular hit, or a footnote in compact camera history. That feature? A built-in projector, capable of producing an image size of up to 40 inches.
First, let's go over the standard items. The camera has a 12MP image sensor and a 5x zoom lens, starting at a nice, wide-angle 28mm equivalent. You also get the wonderful Scene Auto Selector that allows you to forget about the scene modes and just shoot; the camera will do all the thinking for you, just short of actually taking the picture.
Other neat features include the Smart Portrait System, which includes skin softening, face detection for optimal exposure and focus, a new blink proof function that shoots two images and decides when the subject's eyes are widest, a blink warning to let you know if someone did blink, and a smile shutter that will automatically take that picture when your subject smiles. Most of this is standard fare anymore on compact cameras, the projector on the front, however, is not.
While it won't replace your HD TV, the built in projector can make an image from about 5 inches in size all the way to 40 inches, and can throw that image anywhere from 26 inches to 6 feet 6 inches, and can show all your friends that amazing wipe out you had while out wake boarding last weekend, or your family that awesome kegger your frat had last month. The battery can hold enough juice to show up to an hour's worth of photos. The resolution is only VGA, so it's probably a good thing that you can't go much bigger than 40 inches.
This camera can be all yours for about $450 this fall. Get one quickly, it may be a collector's item one day!
