Residents in Hockley Valley, Ontario, are hopping mad today and are determined to stop Narconon from opening. One commented two hours ago, “My extended family in Hockley won't back down and sure appreciate all your support.”
Interviews today with several ex-Narconon and ex-Scientology victims warn of grave dangers if Narconon is permitted to open a 24 bed drug rehab center in Hockley Valley, Ontario. A confidential source confirmed that a second offer to purchase the subject property was submitted and the property will require rezoning to operate as a drug rehab.
What concerns many, who have experienced the Narconon drug rehab program, is their sauna detoxification, better known as the ‘Purification Rundown’ in Scientology. According to some medical experts in drug detoxification, the use of high amounts of vitamins and minerals in the amounts administered by Narconon can be potentially dangerous to the patients of Narconon.
Narconon's clients stay in the sauna for up to five hours at temperatures of up to 80C (170F), ten times longer than the recommended maximum, and cause severe reactions, both physically and emotionally. Of grave concern is the lack of onsite physicians, licensed nurses, or trained medical staff. In fact, in many cases, the employees who monitor the patients are recent Narconon graduates with no training whatsoever.
“The risk to patients of taking high-dose niacin (2,600-5,000mg) is one reason why medical experts assessing the Narconon programme have found that it is a danger to patients -- the Narconon programme has been banned in a number of jurisdictions including France and Quebec.”
The Narconon Sauna and Danger of Death:
“There is a risk that serious medical symptoms from niacin overdose, or from other causes - may be misinterpreted by Narconon staff as the desirable effects of detoxification.”
“In 1995, two young men, Paride Ella (22) and Giuseppe Tomba (26) died suddenly at the Narconon centre in Taceno, Valsassina. Paride Ella died of acute kidney failure (symptoms consistent with a niacin overdose), while the recorded cause of death for Giuseppe Tomba was heart attack.”
“Both patients suffered similar symptoms, vomiting and diarrhoea, for days before their deaths. The young men died within a few days of one another, in the so-called 'detoxification' (ultra-high doses of niacin and other vitamins, multi-hour saunas) stage of the Narconon programme.”
Narconon Reviews is an excellent source of information concerning Narconon, including surveys filled out by ex-Narconon patients.
To date, there are at least 14 documented deaths inside Scientology’s drug rehab centers, Narconon. I received a comment recently that “drug addicts die all the time in drug rehab centers, so what’s the big deal?” The fact is, drug addicts rarely die inside reputable, science based centers that provide medically staffed professionals that monitor patient’s health --- something that Narconon neglects.
Several people interviewed today tell the same horrific story of their time inside the extreme hot sauna. One said they were in the purification rundown with a 7 year old ‘Twin’. Scientology and Narconon pair up participants and call them ‘Twins’. Many stated they had done the purification rundown in the sauna more than once. All said they had severe diarrhea, like “pissing out your ass all day long,” one declared.
Many addicts today have compromised liver conditions that are medically contraindicated for the administration of niacin. Niacin in toxic doses of 2,600-5,000mg is deadly to any liver that has high liver enzyme counts – as many Narconon patients have.
Being a small, rural community, Hockley Valley is not equipped to handle the potential onslaught of 911 calls. Nor does this community have the police resources to handle these calls and still be available to protect community members. Quite simply, Hockley Valley resources could be stretched beyond service capabilities.
The Quebec Ministry of Health shut down the 100 bed Narconon Trois-Rivieres for a reason.
Following a lengthy investigation by the Quebec College of Physicians and the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services, the 100 bed, Narconon Trois-Rivieres was forced to close. Both entities cited Narconon as not being a science based drug rehab, and a danger to patients. Two Quebec physicians were banned from associating with Narconon - putting on notice all other practitioners.
One Hockley Valley resident stated: "We've collected over 800 signatures opposing the zoning proposal. The online petition is a small piece -- all of the others have been from people going door to door," said one concerned citizen. In another email, one stated emphatically "they've [Scientology], messed with the wrong neighborhood …"
