The big Bay Area jazz news this afternoon comes from Berkeley, where the venerable Jazzschool has announced its changing its name.
The dean of Northern California jazz journalists, Jesse Hamlin, is reporting in The Chronicle that Jazzschool has changed its name to California Jazz Academy after its four-year bachelor of music degree in jazz studies received certification from the National Association of Schools of Music.
That recognition qualifies students to receive federal loans and the academy itself to admit overseas students. Benny Green has been named as first artist-in-residence.
