R&B stars Janelle Monáe and Miguel share the spotlight in their new duet “Primetime”, from Monáe’s upcoming album The Electric Lady. Monáe released the third song from her album via her official YouTube channel.
The slow jam departs from Monáe’s most recent release, “Q.U.E.E.N.”, a high-energy dance track featuring Erykah Badu. Monáe and Miguel’s voices complement each other well and their chemistry invokes that of legendary R&B duet partners Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. The smooth, simple style of “Primetime” stands out among current R&B singles by featuring live instruments, including a powerful guitar solo by Kellindo, Monáe’s lead guitarist.
The track emphasizes seizing the love you share with your partner during the “primetime” of your relationship when everything is perfect: “ ’Cause baby it’s the primetime for our love/Ain’t nobody thinkin’ ‘bout the stars above/It’s the primetime for our love/And heaven is bettin’ on us”.
Though the lyrics of the song tell one story—one of a romantic, deep, uplifting love—the music tells another. The sampling of Pixies’ “Where Is My Mind” creates (whether intentional or not) a sultry, haunting undertone that perhaps foreshadows an eerie future for the happy couple.
