Look what’s opening in Toronto cinemas this weekend -
In Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (Columbia Pictures) Nicholas Cage returns as Marvel Comics’ antihero Johnny Blaze, the vigilante motorcycle rider battling reluctant servitude to the devil. Recruited as Satan’s bounty hunter, Blaze transforms into Ghost Rider and defiantly uses his special powers to help others evade the devil’s influence. In this sequel to Ghost Rider (2007) he is summoned by a secret religious sect to save a young boy from demonic control in a way that, if he succeeds, can release Blaze from his own demonic curse. (Available in 3D).
In Darkness (Mongrel Media) is a WWII drama based on Robert Marshall’s book In the Sewers of Lvov. Set in Nazi-occupied Lvov, Poland it tells the true story of Leopold Socha (Robert Wieckiewicz), a Polish sewer worker and part-time thief who capitalizes on the misfortune of several Jews attempting to stay hidden in the sewer system. Produced by Canadians Eric Jordan and Paul Stephens from a screenplay written by Torontonian David F. Shamoon, In Darkness is a Canada-Poland-Germany co-production nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign language film.
In The Secret World of Arrietty (Walt Disney Pictures) a family of tiny people live in quiet obscurity under the floorboards of a suburban home until Arrietty, the daughter, is discovered by the human-sized boy living in the human-sized house. The two form an unlikely friendship which they must keep secret in order to protect Arrietty and her family. This Disney animation is the sixth adaptation of the popular 1952 children’s novel The Borrowers by Mary Norton.
This Means War (20th Century Fox) is a romantic comedy that pits spy versus spy in a battle for the affections of a beautiful woman. Chris Pine and Tom Hardy star as two of the CIA’s best operatives, two buddies who fought as a formidable team until an attractive woman (Reese Witherspoon) comes between them. Now they use their unique skills and hi-tech gadgetry to eliminate the other from the love triangle.
