New movies at Las Vegas theaters 1-28-2012

All of the hype of Oscar nominations is over, winners will be announced in a month. Everyone has put up their top ten lists for 2011. It is traditionally a slow time of the year for films.  Studios save their A films for summer and major holidays, with possible Oscar contenders put aside until almost the end of the year.

There are some good films that opened this weekend.

'The Grey' starring Liam Neeson is about a plane crash in the wilds of Alaska leaving several men to be stalked by wolves. Sounds a tiny bit like the Adam Green film 'Frozen'.

'One for the Money' starring Katherine Heigl is the first film based on a Janet Evanovich book. The film also stars Jason O'Mara who played Conan in last year's dismal remake of 'Conan The Barbarian'. John Leguizamo is also featured and there is a rare appearance by Debbie Reynolds.

'One for the Money' is the first of Evanovich's 'number series', she is on #18 right now. This could turn into a huge franchise if this film does well.

'We Need to Talk About Kevin' features Tilda Swinton ('Chronicles of Narnia' films) as the mother of a teenage boy who went on a killing spree at his high school. This is a timely piece with the 'Columbine' anniversary coming up in April. Swinton also serves as an executive producer on this film.

'Man on a Ledge' is a sometimes uncomfortable film, if you're afraid of heights. However, it's a good movie with enough plot twists to build a roller coaster. Check my review here.

'Albert Nobbs' stars Glenn Close, (who also wrote the screenplay), as a woman who lives as a man in 19th century Ireland. Her attempt at making a living results in a lifetime living as someone is isn't. 'Albert Nobbs' has three Oscar nods, one for Best Actress for Miss Close.

It actually looks like a great week of films, considering the time of year. A best bet would be 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' with 'The Grey' being a good second choice.
