'New Moon' director Chris Weitz on Rachelle Lefevre and 'Breaking Dawn'

The Hollywood Reporter talked to New Moon' Chris Weitz about the Twilight sequel, and the director discussed everything from Rachelle Lefevre's replacement in Eclipse to rumors of the series' fourth film, Breaking Dawn.

THR asked why Weitz would want to be involved in the vampire saga after helming such films as American Pie and About a Boy. "The tonality of the movie, which has a lot to do with heartbreak and longing, depression and reunion and ecstasy -- these were emotions that struck a chord in me," Weitz said. "I really loved the cast; Kristen (Stewart) and Rob (Pattinson) both are exceptionally talented. And I wanted to get my hand back in the game. There were a lot of things in this movie that I knew how to do: A combination of telling a character-based story but also handling special effects and working with young actors."

Regarding Lefevre's replacement by Bryce Dallas Howard in Eclipse, Weitz said, "I don't know much more than everybody else as to why it went down. I think it was a scheduling conflict. I feel very badly for Rachelle, while at the same time think that Bryce (Dallas) Howard is a terrific actress. She'll do a terrific job."

And when asked if he might return to direct the final film in the series, Breaking Dawn, Weitz answered, "No official offer has been made. The fans have been enthusiastic about the footage and the trailer, and the studio responds to that by feeling good about me. We'll have to see how people feel about the entire movie, not only the studio but the fans, before the verdict is out whether I direct Number 4. David Slade is doing a great job on the third film, and by the time that comes out, he'll be the flavor of the moment."

I am going to be the one to say it, but we've all thought it...why don't they replace Nikki Reed. She isnt a bad actress, she is just not Rosalie. I'm a nerd...

why? it's not like she is playing in half the movie anyway why rock the boat. I say just leave her alone damn.

I love bryce howard since spiderman 3, but I have lost alot respect for howard. I think that howard knew what was going on and she still accepted the role. I hate to say this, but I really want her to replaced in spiderman 4. sorry, but it would only make things right.

Are you serious?! My word, I can't believe you're immature enough not to recognize business as business. Don't project your personal feelings on someone just because you lost your ball, you dimwit. It's only fair that Howard is replaces? In what universe? It must be the one of rainbows and unicorns that you live in.

Yes, you must've really loved her to be this juvenile. My hopes for the human race have now lowered significantly.

hmmm, I have to say that I agree with both tess and callie, this is a business all the same, but I did feel twing of hurt and betrayal when they recasted the role of victoria. tess is speaking out of raw emotion and that's the way some of us feel, but callie is so right to see that this a "business", no matter what fans say, the show must go on, it's sad-hurtful, but it is business all the same.

I think it will be interesting to see how Byrce will play out as Victoria. I think she is low-rated actress and needs some publicity for her career to blossom. not all publicity is good publicity. I wish her all the luck in the world. rachelle, I will miss you :(
