Seeing as “Monsters, Inc.” brought in more than half a billion dollars in the Box Office, won an Oscar, and earned a spot on IMDB’s prestigious list of the top 250 films of all time, it’s no surprise that Disney and Pixar are putting everything they have into promoting the film’s upcoming prequel, “Monsters University.” Today, January 1, 2013, Disney and Pixar ushered in the New Year with the best promotional campaigns I’ve ever seen.
“Monsters University” will be a comedy set on the campus of Monsters University before Mike and Sulley became friends. In an effort to hype up the upcoming film, Disney and Pixar have created a truly stunning viral website for “Monsters University” that features a full-fledged college website.
The site features an incredibly well-made commercial (accompanying this article) for the University that actually makes the school look more appealing than most real universities. In the promotional commercial for the school, we get to take a look at the stunning campus, some of the amusing cast, and we get a taste of the clever humor that helped make the original film so enjoyable.
As would be expected, Disney and Pixar perfected every minor detail of the site – monstersuniversity.com redirects to a URL ending in edu, the site features historical facts, maps, university news, Alumni pages, and, most impressively, a fully functional store where visitors can buy genuine Monsters University apparel.
The brief history of the school is, like the rest of the site, well-thought out, and states:
Established in 1313 following a land grant from the city of Monstropolis, Monsters University has grown from a small local center of learning to a leading global institution of higher education. Upon this hallowed ground, some of the most fabled academic buildings in the world have been built, serving the hundreds of thousands of alumni that have walked the halls and grounds of MU.
The “Monsters University” viral site is absolutely worth spending some time exploring, and it makes the wait for the film seem even longer. “Monsters University” will hit theaters on June 21, 2013.
