I'm Able 2 Model is a new modeling agency which opened this month in Ireland. The agency is specifically for children and young adults with Down syndrome, the first of its kind, is launching this month in Ireland. The goal of the agency is to increase representation of people with disabilities in the media.
Dallas, of course, has a number of famous modeling agencies including the Kim Dawson Agency and others, but none that cater exclusively to disabled models. However, I spoke to a representative of a local modeling agency, and they indicated they do have models that have disabilities and from time to time they seek models that represent a certain type for a given project.
One question is whether individuals with disabilities are better served by an agency that caters exclusively to individuals with disabilities or by a mainstream agency? It may also be that some agencies meant to serve individuals with disabilities may have the opposite effect of perpetuating stereotypes.
