New Miss America’s first visit: The USO

Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan signaled the Miss America Organization’s continuing support for troop morale on Sunday by visiting the McCarran Airport USO Center.

The new center opened in Las Vegas before the 2012 holiday season.

"USO Las Vegas is expected to service over 55,000 troops and family members stationed in and transitioning through the Las Vegas region," according to the USO website. "The new 2,830-square-foot facility USO center reflects the glamour of Las Vegas while housing the customary comforts that military members and their families have come to expect. High-definition televisions, a movie theater, a snack bar and lounges are filled with 20 laptop and computer stations with Wi-Fi connectivity, a video gaming area with Xbox and Sony PlayStation consoles. Photos of Las Vegas and USO tour stops color the walls."

The Miss America Organization began supporting the USO during the turbulent 1960s.

"Although the pageant was heavily criticized for the 1967 launch of the 'Miss America U.S.O. Troupes' into Vietnam and around the world, the Miss America Organization to this day maintains its support of the U.S. Armed Forces," according to the Miss America website.
