New Mexico soccer player Elizabeth Lambert is suspended indefinitely (video)

On Thursday night during the New Mexico vs BYU women’s soccer game, Elizabeth Lambert made several physical attacks of violence on players of the BYU team. Officials only viewed one of the hits during the game, and carded Lambert for kicking the soccer ball into another player’s face at close range, but some of the other stunts she pulled are far worse.

People all over the country have viewed the video below and were outraged. It was announced Saturday morning that Elizabeth Lambert, the junior defender form New Mexico had been indefinitely suspended. The video has become one of the most popular searches because of how aggressive Lambert is in it.

Lambert made a public apology for her actions, "I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation. I take full responsibility for my actions and accept any punishment felt necessary," she said.

UPDATE:  The Rhode Island High School gilrs soccer team got into an all team fight on Sunday night that ended with one student dragging another across the field by her hair.  For more on that story, and to see the video of the fight, click here.

There is no place in any sport for a player like her. She got totally carried away and lost her mind. I would almost suggest criminal charges.

  • Melinda 2 years ago

She has just begun to create her own files of violence. I wouldn't even want someone as violent as herself working with the public. She would be a liabiality to any employer.

    thats not cool at all.

You only saw a few seconds of video. How many cheap shots had she endured prior to the retalation. As far as I'm concerned they deserved it. I've been on the receiving end of an elbow to my chest and I bet that hurt more than the punch. The short grabbing is putting her hands too close and could even be violating. I didnt see a video where she initiated it even once.

I think Ms. Lambert's defenders are "defining deviancy down." It's a pretty slippery slope upon which to step.

  • Bud 2 years ago

This Lambert lady should have her scholarship taken away permanently and she should be enrolled in anger management classes immediately at her expense.

There is no excuse for such behavior and perhaps she has been doing this all along. Her apology falls on deaf ears. This kind of thing becomes bigger as time goes on unless she gets help, and lots of it, right now.

Finally, a reason to watch soccer.

I am curious about how the players that she hurt came out, especially the girl whose pony tail got yanked so hard she came off her feet and landed on the ground. If I were that young lady's parents, I'd be suing the coach for not taking Lambert out of the game when it was obvious she was out of control. I would press criminal charges. Those actions went beyond blatant fouls; they were assault.

So much for any semblance of fair play, self-control and maturity. If actions speak louder than words then Ms. Lambert has screamed. If, on her own, she cannot find another sport receptive of her aggression then the powers at New Mexico should at least make certain it's no longer soccer.

No name, that girl initiated EVERYTHING, except for the elbow, and as far as I'm concerned, I've been on the receiving end too, and when you're in that position, you get elbowed like that all the time when you're too close. Her retaliation in shoving her forward and the punching her in the back real hard was WAY too much. Yes, when you use your elbow, it's considered a foul, hence the "shoulder to shoulder" rule, however, Lambert's reaction is beyond inappropriate...many times and initiated every other horrendous foul.

Why weren't the referees managing this earlier?

Paul Arsenault: You are right. Let's just shoot her, and put her out of misery!

Should be kicked off the team and suspended from school.

I believe that the refs for this game should be penalized in some way!! I have been to too many soccer games where the officials do not make calls on these blatant fouls, and one of the players ends up being taken away in an ambulance. Why aren't the refs held to a certain standard??

  • correct 2 years ago

truthfully, if you can't take the heat, just quit. all you losers are so worried about physical play and a few cheap shots. if you have played ANY contact sport at a higher level than JV in your life, you know that it ALWAYS goes both ways. if it was all one-sided, the BYU team would have reacted harshly, and the affected players would have been very angry. we saw none of that, and when that is the cases, it is almost always because they know they deserve it and have it coming to them. it's a lot mental. i know times when i've even thrown enough small cheap shots to warrant a few BIG cheap shots, and the big ones are the ones that are always called. in this case, Lambert was just lucky the referees did not see them.

it's competition, people, and if you don't think these girls were doing that all year, you're sadly mistaken.

To Correct.... You represent the worst kind of athlete out there and the reason that sports have deteriorated from games of talent, skill, and intelligence, to games of brute force, cheap shots, and downright cheating. I've played soccer for over 35 years--and yes, at every level except professional. Never in my years of playing varsity, college, select, state championship and regional championship soccer did we ever see the level of cheating that you see in soccer today. Soccer has always been a contact sport and very physical. But "physical" shouldn't mean cheap and shouldn't excuse cheating. Shame on you for suggesting that this is acceptable.

My daughter has played soccer for 16 years and never, ever, have I seen such unacceptable behavior. If she received any type of athletic money, it should be taken from her. She should be kicked off the team. She is truly a poor example of an athlete. She is a disgrace and embarrassment to the school. She let her emotions get away from her? Really? There is a difference between playing physical and cheapshots. I hope to see her name removed from the roster.

  • Carl 2 years ago

I agree that she shouldn't have been that violent but like she said, she was into the game. You all don't know what was going on between those two players. Never did Elizabeth start it, she wasn't the one that started the cheap play. She shouldn't have carried it on, but she didn't start it. Those players on the other team are just as responsible as her, they did something to deserve what they got. Soccer is an aggressive sport, you must be ready for ANYTHING. If you dish it out you must be ready to take whatever comes next. BYU isn't innocent in this, it just happens all be pinned on Elizabeth.

  • Rike 2 years ago

This constitutes a criminal charge of assault. And suspension was too good. Expulsion is more appropriate and I'd say she needs to be indefinitely barred from application to all other Universities. College is an opportunity and a privilege and she blew it big time with this behavior on national TV. No second chances for her as she just proved she doesn't deserve it.

I DON'T THINK SOCCER IS "AN AGGRESSIVE SPORT". SOME PLAYERS ARE AGGRESSIVE LIKE LIZ, THAT'S FOR SURE. SOCCER IS VERY PHYSICAL, BUT PART OF THE SPORT IS TO CONTROL YOUR EMOTION AND FOCUS IN THE GAME AND TECHNICS. IF SHE ONLY HAD RESPONDED IN THE SAME LEVEL OF "VIOLENCE" SHE GOT THAT DAY, ANOTHER STORY WOULD BE.
MY 10 YEARS OLD DAUGHTER IS PLAYING SOCCER NOW, AND I WILL NOT LET HER SEE THIS VIDEO. IT WILL TERRIFY HER. IT IS SIMPLE UNACCEPTABLE.

  • Curt 2 years ago

In the first clip,a un-named BYU player gives Ms. Lambert a short lt elbow to the mid-chest, I hear zero comments about the BYU player using foul tactics. Ms Lamberts retaliation is very obvious. If you have evey been around soccer, you see players grabbing and pushing all the time, some "victims" go too far in their retaliation, I believe Ms. Lambert did in this case. Before I make judgement on her future, I would need to see the entire game footage.

Let me give you an elbow in the chest and see what you do.
