On October 10th, Montes’ girlfriend found her six-month-old Calico kitten in awful condition: Lulu couldn’t stand on her own and was just leaning against the wall in her litter box. The woman took Lulu to her mother’s house and questioned her boyfriend, who admitted to having strangled the kitten until she lost consciousness, earlier.
A few days later, the girlfriend noticed that Lulu’s hair was falling out in huge clumps and interrogated Montes again, who allegedly told her that he had immersed the kitten in scalding water.
Lulu is being treated for her injuries, which are consistent with being burnt by hot water, and she may need skin grafts. Montes was taken into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on Wednesday, and is being held on a cash-only bond of $50,000.
