New Mexico film industry shines during 2013 award season

Breaking Bad, Game Change and The Avengers are making strides at the 2013 Golden Globes and People’s Choice Awards, pulling in countless nominations for New Mexico films, shows and actors.

Breaking Bad, a dramatic television series set and produced in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been nominated for the Best Television Series-Drama at the Golden Globes. Bryan Cranston who plays Walter White in the in AMC drama series has also been nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series. Cranston has earned three consecutive Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy Awards and is in the running for a Golden Globe on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 8ET/5PT on NBC. Albuquerque locals take pride in the city’s role as the show’s set, even identifying locations in episodes.

Game Change, an American HBO political drama produced in New Mexico, is also turning many heads this year at the Golden Globes by receiving five different nominations. According to New Mexico film industry blog “One Headlight Ink,” the movie primarily casted extras in Santa Fe. Along with the nomination for Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, Game Change actors have been nominated for their leading and supporting roles.

The Avengers, an American superhero film produced in New Mexico, was a hit at the 2013 People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 with three movie nominations and two acting nominations. The Avengers’ Robert Downey Jr. walked away with Favorite Movie Actor and Favorite Movie Superhero. While filming, the cast was often spotted at local Albuquerque businesses, including Chris Hemsworth, the actor who played Thor. See a full list of winners from the People’s Choice Awards.

Also nominated at the People’s Choice Awards was Neil Patrick Harris. Harris, the womanizing Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother, was born in Albuquerque, raised in Ruidoso and attended La Cueva High School. How I Met Your Mother’s nomination for Favorite Network TV Comedy was accompanied by Neil Patrick Harris’ nomination for Favorite Comedic TV Actor.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, another actor who lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was also nominated for Favorite Comedic TV Actor. Ferguson, who plays Mitchell Pritchett on the ABC sitcom Modern Family, has earned three nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
