We're only minutes away from Microsoft's press conference, which will kick start today's E3 presentations. A brand new trailer for Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain leaked moments ago, and features tons of new footage depicting Big Boss, who is sporting a new ponytail and some extra scars, and his troops, which are now being referred to as the Diamond Dogs.
The trailer shows the aftermath of Ground Zeroes, the game's prologue that released earlier this year, and has Big Boss sprinkling the ashes of his fallen comrades over his face. The six minute trailer also shows us a few members of the returning cast and crew, such as Kaz Miller and Huey Emmerich, the latter of which is shown tied to a chair, possibly being tortured by Big Boss. This seems to support the popular theory that Huey betrayed the MSF during the events of Ground Zeroes, acting as Skullface's way into the base.
For those who may have missed the aforementioned prologue, Ground Zeroes served to bridge the gap between 2010's Peace Walker and the upcoming Phantom Pain, showing fans how Big Boss' Mother Base was destroyed, and landing him in a coma that will take the franchise into 1984 (a fitting year for a world in which Cypher rules everything).
Today's new trailer also demonstrates the game's themes of vengeance and regret, both of which Kojima has stressed will be huge factors in taking Big Boss from his depictions in previous games as the protagonist, to his more villainous role in the original Metal Gear. The graphics look absolutely stunning, and Mike Oldfield's “Nuclear” perfectly suits the overall theme. We're excited to see more of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which still doesn't have a solid release window. We'll have more information as it's released.
