It’s spring hiking season on Mount Diablo and the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association’s (MDIA) new state park trail map makes it a piece of cake to navigate the area. Three years in the making, the new 7th edition offers scores of updates to trails, an easy-to-read index, more details about the features and amenities in popular visitor areas, and map scales and compass presented in a hiking compass format with magnetic declination information.
The water resistant four color map costs $6 and is available at entrances and visitor centers on Mount Diablo and in area bookstores and sporting goods retailers. It can also be purchased at www.mdia.org for $7.50. Net proceeds from the map directly benefit Mount Diablo State Park.
MDIA produced the atlas with hundreds of hours of volunteer walking trails, checking trail signs and making sure the map accurately reflects the situation on the ground. The 8th edition is not expected until 2016.
MDIA is a non-profit volunteer organization that assists the California Department of Parks and Recreation in maintaining and interpreting Mount Diablo State Park for its 700,000 visitors each year. Through education, sponsored activities and publications, MDIA fosters appreciation and the enlightened use of Mount Diablo State Park. MDIA provides the resources necessary to keep the Summit Museum and Mitchell Canyon Visitor Center open throughout the year, and through the Volunteers in the Park Program, train and manage the many park docents, sponsor guided hikes, and help maintain trails.
