Manchester United recently set a new British transfer record with the signing of Argentine midfielder Angel Di Maria from Spanish club Real Madrid for a cool fee just under $100 million dollars. Now just a few days removed from his move the player was quoted by the Daily Star on August 28, 2014, claiming how much he desires to be a success for his new club.
Having selected to wear the same all important number seven kit that was worn by David Beckham and more recently by his now former Real Madrid teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, Maria knows that there are a lot of eyes on him to be a major success:
"I was aware of the importance of the number seven shirt, Cristiano Ronaldo had spoken to me at Real Madrid and told me how important it was.
I wanted to wear this shirt and do as much for the club as Ronaldo and the others could do.
The club also wanted me to wear it so I want to live up to it."
Last season Maria scored four goals and provided 17 assists in 34 La Liga appearances for Madrid and he will be tasked to maintain that level of goal creating talent at United.
However, that will prove to be a task all of itself as the club are in the midst of a major transition with a third manager in three seasons and a growing frustration for positive results to come.
Maria is believed set to make his United debut when the club face recently promoted Burnley this weekend in the third match day of the 2014-15 English Premier League campaign.
