New Madden 2010 features - What you are going to love about Madden 2010

EA Sports Madden 2010 Box

The NFL draft is over and minicamp season is upon us, so it is time to start getting ready for the next installment of the Madden series. And if you haven't been keeping up with the announcements from the dev team, there are a lot of new Madden 2010 features that you are really going to love.

New Madden 2010 Features:

Realistic Football. The theme of Madden 2010 is to focus on providing a more realistic football experience. The Madden 2010 features that cover this area include Procedural Awareness, which allows the game to keep up with where the players are looking, and QB improvements, including breaking the accuracy stat into short, medium and long accuracy as well as tracking the ability to throw on the run or fool people with the play action.

Quarterbacks will also be able to throw as they are being hit, which might turn out to be a great play, or they could end up throwing a flutter ball.

The WR-DB interaction is also improving. Not only will Procedural Awareness mean that DBs will have to turn and look for the ball instead of immediately snapping around, but the WR route running and DB coverage skills will be much more defined by related skills.

Finally, more emphasis is going to be put on a player's weight, especially in the blocking game. This means that 190lb 93 speed defensive end might just get put on his butt when trying to go up against the 330lb right tackle. Weight will also be a factor in how hard someone hits when tackling.

Mathew Stafford's Madden 2010 stats show the changes in the passer accuracy model

Expanded Stats, Realistic Speed and Better Stat Progression. The team has really retooled the stats to expand the range. This means there will be a bigger difference between average players and superstars. As an example, the route running ability in Madden 09 could range from 62-99. In Madden 2010, it will range from 35-99.

Player speed is also being tuned to be a bit more realistic to what we see on Sundays. This might be one of the most important Madden 2010 features as speed is one of the most important stats in the game. Besides just going for more realism, the team is also taking into account speed when a player tries to turn, so no more 90 degree cuts at full speed.

Player progression is also being tweaked to be more realistic, with younger players progressing faster and older players digressing faster.

Wildcat Formation. Yep, the Wildcat is making it into Madden. You can check out some of the Wildcat Screens.

Depth of Field. The graphical style of Madden 2010 is changing to include depth of field, which will make players and objects up close really stick out against the slightly blurred background of objects and players that are further away. Check out the screenshot at the end of the article for a great example.

Adaptive AI. Last, we come to what might end up being the coolest of the new Madden 2010 features. The Adaptive AI in Madden 2010 will allow the game to keep track of the plays being called by the player. If you've found a money play that you are running a lot, the opposing players will catch onto it and will defend it better. The opposing coach will also be a bit brighter, calling more flat coverage if you send your HBs into the flats for quick passes and calling more QB spy defenses if you do a lot of scrambling runs with the QB.

This features should really help keep us on our toes a bit more and make us mix up our playcalling. It is easy to fall into a comfortable rhythm of calling the same basic plays over and over again, and this feature will help break us out of that rhythm.

Keep up with all of the Madden 2010 features as the information is released.

Is madden going to have some sort of pregame postgame or halftime presentation? Like espn with TO on da cover. They had great presentations which inspired many people to play their game. It's been my prayer for many years. LET US SEE the ANNOUNCERS AGAIN! At least madden 98 tried. It had madden himself up on the game. That was the good old time.

was there anything this year that really changed the way you play the game

When are we going to see a REAL play editor? Where you can create any play imaginable, where I draw every route for every player in DETAIL. Anybody remember the play editor on the very first Madden for the PC back in 1989-1991? That's what I'm talking about. EA did it right in the very first game they made, but has never implemented it since. A real strategy is being able to be creative IN EVERY WAY with your plays. If I want to line up and run the wishbone and send players in motion and run the Option, I should be able to CREATE that with my own uniqueness that I wish to pour into the play. The first Madden game NAILED this right, but every Madden game sense has given a very poor play editor (if we can even call them that).
