New 'Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII' screenshots released (Photos)

Square-Enix France released some brand new photos on March 18 of "Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII", which show off some pretty impressive graphics that we'll be finding soon enough when the game is released later this year.

In addition to giving gamers glimpses of some sandy dunes (reportedly called the “Dead Dune”), ancient ruins, and a desert oasis of sorts, the new screenshots for the third game in the “Final Fantasy XIII” compilation also show off one of Lightning’s Overclock abilities, which is said to immobilize her enemies. Overclock abilities require the use of GP, which is a new stat to be implemented in the game.

While the first “Final Fantasy XIII” game received a lot of criticism since its release in 2010 over the battle system and its linear qualities, Square Enix seems to be bound and determined to make up for its failures in the original game. Sequel “Final Fantasy XIII-2” has had a mostly positive reception so far since its release, and “Lightning Returns” appears to be shaping up quite decently as well. Only time will tell though how the final result will fair with gamers.

“Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII” has a proposed release date of Fall 2013 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
