New level of safety comes to the Death Valley area highways

Verison Wireless is now active in Trona, Ca. Residents snd travelers rejoice.
New Wireless service in Trona, CA. makes residents and travelers sigh in relief

Local residents lunching at the local deli-gas station, T-Stop can now check in with the boss:   The cell phone service so long desired in the town of Trona, Ca. went active on September 2nd, 2009.   Verison Wireless is the carrier, and only those phones will work here presently.  Although a few with  Altell phones get signals also, but not in all areas of the town.

The long awaited service will add an level of safety to the travelers of this area also.  The ability to reach someone in event of accidents while traveling has left a few on the roads here waiting patiently for someone passing by to get help.   The local kids were anxiously waiting to text message, and call each other with phones that before were on the charger most of the time. Until they got a chance to drive toward Ridgecrest, Ca. when a signal would show up.  It was like a thousand twinkling lights went of that day over Trona.

No report yet as to how many the school confiscated that first day the signal worked.  No cells allowed here at school.  But that will one day pass to as the school sees the value of the student having access to home and others.   It may take a while to jerk them into the 21's century on that one.

We visit a friend up near Pt. Reyes from time to time, an area similarly isolated in terms of cell connectivity. I find it refreshing, but that tune would likely change if I needed help and had to walk to a try to find a payphone. Do payphones still exist? ;-) My sympathies to your school teachers and administrators as they adjust to this "new thang" on the block. The area's Verizon reseller is happy, though, I bet!

It seems with every new technological addition there are great benefits -- and accompanying downsides. Still, I'll bet the kids are delighted!
