The German magazine Der Spiegel, received newly leaked documents yesterday from Edward Snowden who is currently hiding out in Russia. The leaked classified documents show that the National Security Agency (NSA) has been spying on the United Nations, the European Union, and 80 embassies and consulates in a worldwide spy program.
In the summer of 2012, the NSA decrypted the U.N. security system that is used for their video conferencing, according to the newly leaked NSA classified documents.
The leaked documents show that the United States is not the only one to have cracked the U.N. encryption codes for their video conference system. While the NSA was listening in on the U.N., they also caught the Chinese listening in. The document goes on to say, that the U.N. convinced the United States to not take any “covert actions” against China.
The leaked documents also show that that the NSA placed listening devices in more than 80 embassies and consulates worldwide. The monitoring program in the leaked documents is referred to by the NSA as the "Special Collection Service" and operated without the knowledge of the host country. The documents also show that the NSA maintains “listening posts in Frankfurt, Germany and Vienna, Austria."
The leaked NSA documents said that the eavesdropping devices in the embassies and consulates should be “kept secret at all costs”, and if they were to become know, it could “cause serious damage with our relationships with the host countries”.
Certainly don’t need a leaked document to point that out, but it’s good to know, that they know this.
But it doesn’t end there, the documents that were leaked by Edward Snowden to Der Spiegel magazine, show that the NSA has been spying on the new EU (European Union) embassy located on 3rd Avenue in New York since they moved in last September 2012, and the EU embassy in Washington D.C..
The Intel that Edward Snowden took from the NSA is obviously very damaging to our government and its intelligence gathering network. We have already learned about the NSA spy program called “PRISM” that literally stores every phone call, e-mail, and comments left on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, by U.S. citizens, as well as foreigners.
In 2011 the secret courts called FISA ruled that certain aspects of the PRISM program were unconstitutional, but everything that the FISA courts says or does is secret, and it’s illegal to make it public. That includes any of their rulings or the warrants they issue for surveillance.
And the only reason why we know it is unconstitutional, is because Edward Snowden leaked the NSA documents to the Guardian newspaper that cover the FISA ruling.
These revelations regarding the NSA spying on our allies will be a nightmare for our State Department, and the NSA’s intelligence gathering will be setback several years.
With the NSA documents that are still in the hands of Edward Snowden, they have to be keeping a lot of people, up late at night.
