New Lays Flavor Finalists Hits Store Shelves

Last year, as part of the Do Us a Flavor Contest, Lays released Chicken and Waffles, Sriracha, and Cheesy Garlic Bread, and ultimately, the Cheesy Garlic Bread was the big winner. The company is at it again.

The four new finalists for 2014 are: Cheddar Bacon Mac and Cheese, Cappuccino, Wavy Mango Salsa, and Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger. They'll hit store shelves nationwide on July 28 where chip aficionados can choose their favorite. Just like last year, the ultimate winner will be kept on the shelves while the rest go into the chip graveyard.

There is, indeed, a black market for discontinued flavors. A recent search on eBay turned up two bags of Sriracha chips that sold for $9.99 a piece (with free shipping), and several completed listings for Chicken and Waffles some of which sold for $11.99 a bag plus shipping. No doubt the black market will continue once the new flavors hit store shelves and the runners-up get discontinued.

The finalists and their creations recently handled out samples of their flavor ideas in NYC. The final four are Meneko Spigner McBeth of Deptford, N.J with Wasabi Ginger, Matt Allen, of Troy, OH with Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese, Julia Stanley-Metz of Sacramento with Mango Salsa, and Chad Scott of Las Vegas with Cappuccino.

Rumor has it the Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger is the heavy favorite. Those who want to cast their vote once they grab their own bags can go to dousaflavor.com.
