Amazon announced the new Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch and 8.9-inch tablets somewhat quietly late last night. According to a Sept. 25 ABC News report, this new tablet from Amazon could actually be an iPad killer. That could certainly offer consumers the opportunity for plenty of good deals and some sales on tablets come this holiday shopping season. They begin shipping on Oct. 18, 2013.
One of the best new features of the Kindle Fire HDX is that both models slimmed down in weight. The 7-inch version is actually lighter than Apple's iPad Mini, and the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX is actually much lighter than the iPad. That is great news for consumers because it's easier to hold and easier to take with you. Amazingly, the processor is also three times as fast as the Kindle Fire HD that Amazon released in 2012. What a great update for this tablet!
One of the coolest new features of this Kindle Fire HDX (all models) is that it comes with a "Mayday" button. Users can press the button and connect with Amazon tech support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via live video chat, which is one-way (whew! Don't have to worry about your pjs for this one). That's pretty amazing.
The HDX models have higher pixel density that Apple's Retina display as well. You'll get 323 pixels per inch in the 7-inch tablet and 339 pixels per inch in the 8.9-inch tablet. The 7-inch Kindle Fire HDX starts at $229 with 16 GB of storage and the 8.9-inch version starts at $379. At these prices, they are affordable, so expect to find them on many Christmas lists in the coming months!
Amazon even updated its Kindle Fire HD 7-inch a bit as well. The Kindle Fire HD 2 will have a front-facing camera and a microphone. It costs $139 for an 8-gig version and $169 for a 16-gig version, which is a pretty significant price drop.
Overall, the Amazon Kindle refresh offers good deals for consumers in this upcoming holiday shopping season. This is one gift that Santa should be able to easily say "yes" to.
