New Jersey waitress let go: Gay waitress from receipt hoax fired?

A New Jersey waitress let go after making headlines with a forged message on a receipt is making headlines again. Dayna Morales, a lesbian and former Marine working at a New Jersey restaurant, has been relieved of her duties at the Gallop Asian Bistro. However, a statement released by the restaurant indicated that the decision was mutual.

Morales was thrust into the spotlight after claiming that a family who dined at the restaurant stiffed her on a tip due to her "lifestyle." It all started when Morales posted an image of a receipt to Facebook that included this homophobic message in lieu of a tip: "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle."

According to a Dec. 9, 2013 report by the Huffington Post, the New Jersey waitress was let go, and the restaurant where she worked posted a statement on Facebook announcing that Morales was no longer employed there.

The restaurant explained that they completed an internal investigation but were unable to conclude exactly what transpired on the evening when Morales allegedly received the homophobic note in lieu of a tip.

The following message was posted by the restaurant on Dec. 7, 2013:

The Gallop Asian Bistro has taken seriously the allegations made by Ms. Dayna Morales, and those made against her. Despite news reports to the contrary, this is not a simple, straight-forward matter and we have conducted our own internal investigation. The results of that investigation are inconclusive as to exactly what happened between Ms. Morales and the customers that night. However, in light of the investigation and recent events, both Ms. Morales and Gallop Asian Bistro have made a joint decision that Ms. Morales will no longer continue her employment at our restaurant. We wish her well in the future.

Overall, this has been an unfortunate incident for Gallop Asian Bistro, our employees, and our customers. We are dedicated to providing excellent Asian cuisine and superior service. We have the utmost faith in our management and staff and we welcome the opportunity to serve our customers.

The receipt hoax came to a head after a family, who wished to remain anonymous, approached a local news station with their copy of the same receipt which included a generous $18 tip. They also produced a credit card statement that further buttresses their claim. The total amount charged to their Visa card was $111.55, which reflects the original bill amount of $93.55, plus an additional $18.00.

When news of the waitress allegedly being stiffed on a tip went viral, people from all over the world began to send her money, some of which she pledged to donate to the Wounded Warrior Project. Now that the New Jersey waitress was let go, or resigned, anyone interested in the worthy cause of the Wounded Warrior Project can certainly donate to them directly.
