New Jersey teen suing parents for child support drops lawsuit, moves back home

The New Jersey 18-year-old who sued her parents after she claims they refused to pay her bills, including her private school tuition and potential college tuition, because she wouldn’t abide by their rules, has dropped the lawsuit, according to a report today from the New Jersey Star-Ledger.

Rachel Canning, 18, formally ended the case that had made national headlines in recent weeks, with Family Division Judge Peter Bogaard ordering the dismissal after the “voluntary decision.”

Canning had moved out of her parent’s house in October, just two days shy of her 18th birthday, when she claimed her parents refused to aid her financially when she didn’t abide by their house rules and break up with her boyfriend.

Though technically an adult, Canning said she still depended on her parents, Sean and Elizabeth, and shouldn’t be deemed “emancipated.”

Among the damages the Morris Catholic High School honor student and athlete sought was $654 per week in child support, plus private school and college tuition and payment of her legal bills.

However, Canning said the media attention she received for the lawsuit was overwhelming, and she had a change of heart.

“I wanted to,” Canning said of moving back in with her parents and dropping the suit, adding no one “forced” or “coerced” her into the decision.

Bogaard said during the proceedings that Canning “is obviously an intelligent young woman who has a bright future,” and advised she “look forward and not look back.”
