The high court rejected Republican Governor Chris Christie's request to delay same-sex marriages and obliged the state to allow same-sex couples to wed beginning on Monday. Christie favors civil unions but opposes same-sex marriage. His administration had tried to delay the granting of marriage licenses in the state.
In this unanimous decision Chief Justice Stuart Rabner wrote, "The State has advanced a number of arguments, but none of them overcome this reality: same-sex couples who cannot marry are not treated equally under the law today. The harm to them is real, not abstract or speculative"
