Helen Walsh Folsom, author of several books about Ireland, recently published another novel, “Brandeen, In the Shadow of Captain Moonlight,” about her fictional family, the Fitzmichaels.

This book predates her last novel, "Fianna, The Dark Web of the Brotherhood," and is about her heroine, Brandeen, who believed her entire life that her father, Daniel Fitzmichael, did not care anything about her or her mother. She grew up with the entire village referring to her as a “woods colt.”

However, when Brandeen’s father returns, he insists she come to the family’s traditional home and learn the business of a shipping magnate. Although she learns to love the business, she is continually threatened by someone in her father’s house and is forced to make a decision between her father and the infamous Irish hero, Captain Moonlight.

Folsom has published three books before Brandeen and was listed for several years on the former Irish Books and Media best seller list. When she retired from community service several years ago, she decided to write.

“I wanted to write about something I could never get tired about researching,” Folsom said. “I grew up loving the Irish folklore and stories and movies featuring Irish actors like Jimmy Cagney and Pat O’Brien. I knew I never would tire of the Irish.”

Part of Folsom’s obsession with all things Irish comes from her great grandmother, Lizzie Walsh, of whom she has dedicated her recent book entitled, “Brandeen.”

Nevertheless, Folsom’s writing is not only fictional. She has published other non-fiction books about Ireland such as “St. Patrick's Secrets: 101 Little-Known Truths and Tales of Ireland” and “Ah, Those Irish Colleens!” a book featuring 13 Irish women and how they affected Irish history for more than 2,000 years. Through her research, she has seen the injustices against the Irish and admired their battle for freedom and their independent nature.

“Brandeen, In the Shadow of Captain Moonlight” is available on Kindle through Amazon.com.
