Perhaps it is because of Apple's secretive nature, but it doesn't take much to stir up a rumor whirlwind with the iPhone. This time it is the use of "iPhone 3.1" in data being tracked by PinchMedia. The iPhone 3.1 designation has been around for a while, but isn't currently being used. (The iPhone 3GS uses the iPhone 2.1 designation.)
Is this the next generation iPhone being tested? Perhaps. But it could also be something completely different, such as the oft-rumored Apple Tablet, which will use the iPhone OS. Or it could be a Verizon-enabled version of the iPhone, though a jump from 2.1 to 3.1 usually means a major change to the feature set.
