The IZOD IndyCar Series may have left Indianapolis behind for Texas, but some things (unusual though they are) have not changed. Despite losing his engineer earlier in the week, Alex Tagliani once again put his Sam Schmidt Motorsports car on pole for the first of the Firestone Twin 275s.
Of course, Allen McDonald, who moved back to Andretti Autosport, was merely replaced by the engineer that won the Indy 500 with Dan Wheldon: Todd Malloy. That might count as one of the best substitutions in many years.
Keep in mind that qualifying only sets the grid for the FIRST race. The starting order for the second 114-lap race (each "heat race" will give out half-points) will be determined by a random draw. Backup cars can also be pulled out during the one-hour intermission. Needless to say, it's already setting up to be a fun weekend.
