With more people watching movies at home, theaters around Pittsburgh continue to close. And when films are premiering first on DVD or are newly released as the same time as they are playing in town, as is the case this week with a couple of Import DVDs, it becomes even more apparent that one day in the not-so distant future that every movie will appear first in your living room.
Until that day occurs though, here is a list of new Indie DVDs that are available to watch at home (with info on where to rent or buy) starting on the last Tuesday in January.

"Barbara"- An icey blonde Doctor (Nina Hoss) in 1980's East Germany is banished because of her political beliefs to a small county Hospital. A measured Thriller that builds to a precise examination of an intellectual woman repressed in a banal regime. Enthralling. Germany's entry for this year's Oscar in the "Best Foreign Language Film" category. Only available to own on Import DVD from England with subtitles, long before any other local debut.
"Cherry Tree Lane"- Hoodie Horror from England by Paul Andrew Williams, Writer and Director of "The Cottage", brings this well-worn urban legend of angry nihilistic teens who force their way into the pleasant home of a married couple. Survivalist tension-fueled tropes with updated trappings propels this violent genre picture forward to it's unenviable conclusion. Available to rent at area Family Video stores.

"Hello I Must Be Going"- A thirty-something divorcee (Melanie Lynskey) hooks-up with a naive 19-year old to reinvigorate her dismal life while she lives with her parents. A witty and warm send-up that succeeds with a strong lead performance by Lynskey and the usual style and strength of Blythe Danner as her mom. Available to rent locally at Family Video or for only .99 cents to stream at Amazon Instant Video.
"Holy Motors"- Read a full review, see a slideshow or watch the Trailer. Now available to buy on Import DVD from England with subtitles, while it's also still playing theatrically in Pittsburgh.
"Seven Psychopaths"- A black Comedy about the Los Angeles criminal underworld of holding pets for ransom seen through the exploits of a frustrated screenwriter (Colin Farrell). An all-star cast of psychos with Indie panache includes Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell and Tom Waits. A humorous Crime Drama that fizzles out before the final bang. Available to rent at Netflix or Redbox.
