New indie DVDs for January 22 (Photos)

Cold weather keeps everyone inside a little bit more, especially for this time of the year in Pittsburgh. So to stave off cabin fever here is a list of new releases of Indie DVDs for the week ahead. With where to find them to buy or rent online so as you don't even have to leave the house.

Now Available:

"American Mary"- The Soska sisters, makers of the cult crash-up "Dead Hooker in a Trunk", return with their latest-- a crazy female revenge flick, featuring a highly stylized concept and slick look. A gruesome story of an American med student (Katharine Isabelle of "Ginger Snaps") studying abroad and apparently broke, who must perform some illegal surgeries for a seedy underground of thieves and crooks. Wild and wicked, certainly inspired. A cross between the black laughs of "Ms. 45" fantasy and torture porn carnage. Available exclusively to own on unrated Import DVD from England, months before a possible theatrical release.

"Fat Kid Rules the World"- Sincere Drama about a lost obese kid (Jacob Wysocki) finding his way behind the drum kit after help from a street-wise musician (Matt O'Leary). Actor Matthew Lillard of "SLC Punk", "Serial Mom" and "Scream" fame, finds his Indie roots by directing his first feature from a successful Kickstarter campaign, that then went on to garner critical praise at last year's SXSW fest. Click here for the red-band Trailer. Available at Netflix and local Family Video stores.

"Hard Romanticker"- Artsploitation films, this year's most exciting new DVD distributor, delivers another hard-edged Art House entry. A violent Japanese gangland tale of a cocky young hoodlum who soon finds himself on the receiving end as he becomes the target for bloody retribution when someone accidentally kills the grandmother of a rival thug. And it doesn't help that the police are on his tail as well. Volatile action and visceral thrills. Available only to own in an unrated edition.

"The Imposter"- Read a full review, see a slideshow or watch the Trailer. Available at Netflix.

"Nobody Walks"- Nobody walks in L.A.-- especially when they can flag down a ride in this endearing ensemble Comedy that includes Olivia Thirlby, John Krasiniski and Rosemarie DeWitt. A young artist moves into a laid-back household only to change that family dynamic for the worse. Lighthearted and loose. Available at Netflix.
