On Wednesday, October 16 Entertainment Weekly posted the first images from "The Day of the Doctor," the 50th anniversary television special for "Doctor Who," the long running British science fiction show. The show will air on Sunday, November 23 across the world and bring two Doctors together to solve one of the biggest mysteries in the universe.
The series will pick up where the seventh season ended and explain the appearance of John Hurt as The Doctor. David Tennant will return as the Tenth Doctor and Matt Smith will make one of his final appearances on the Eleventh Doctor. Billie Piper and Jenna Coleman will also return as companions for the Doctors. The special will feature a lot of pictures and several scenes where filmed in the National Gallery of Wales in Cardiff.
The new images show the Doctors each flying the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) on a new adventure. Tennant is even flying the TARDIS he had during his run as the Doctor, so there is plenty of time travel in the special. In one of the images Matt Smith is hanging by his hands as the TARDIS is suspended above London. That scene was heavily photographed when it was filmed last spring. Jenna Coleman (Clara) and Jemma Hargrave (Kate Stewart) are looking up in suspense.
Only those three doctors have been confirmed to appear in the television special, although several other actors in the role revealed their wish to be a part of the event. The fiftieth anniversary will focus on the dark Doctor and his past. The images seem to hint that he has been through battles and struggles more so than ten or eleven and carries a red sonic screwdriver. Tune in to BBC on November 23, 2013 to see the time war and learn more about the mysterious doctor.
