A new cooking series is starting this month on PBS. A Chef's Life, is an inside look at Chef Vivian Howard and her husband Ben Howard. They left New York and started a restaurant, The Chef & The Farmer, in Vivian's hometown of Kingston, North Carolina. Locally farmed produce is used at their restaurant and time honored traditions in cooking are given a fresh modern twist with Vivian's unique creativity.
Even though we live here in the Northwest, this show appeals to our way of life and cooking as well. More and more people are getting on board with healthy cooking and gaining awareness of where their food is being grown. Farm to table is becoming a popular choice for many.
In the first episode, corn is the main ingredient discussed. Chef Vivan shares her way of using corn in recipes such as Corn Relish and teaches how to smoke corn on the cob. She also shares with her audience the tradition of "putting up" corn for the winter.
The second episode showcases strawberries. The recipes shared include a tempting Coconut Cornbread Strawberry Shortcake with fresh whipped cream. There is also a teaching segment on making strawberry preserves.
