New Haven Open adds four Top-20 players

The field for the 2014 New Haven Open received a major boost over the holiday weekend when former New Haven champion Petra Kvitova, currently the No. 6-ranked women's tennis player in the world, along with No. 11 Sara Errani and No. 19 Genie Bouchard have all committed to play in the tournament. The three Top 20 stars join defending champion Simona Halep, currently ranked No. 4.

In 2012, Kvitova breezed through the brackets in New Haven without dropping a set, defeating four top-20 players in the process, and reached in the finals last year. The 24-year-old Czech native is having a solid 2014 season on the WTA circuit having reached the semifinals in Madrid earlier this month, as well as the quarterfinals at both Doha and Miami. Kvitova won Wimbledon and the year-end WTA Championships in 2011, which earned her “Player of the Year” accolades. That year she also reached her career-high world ranking: No. 2.

Errani will be making her seventh appearance in the New Haven. The 27-year-old Italian has seven career WTA singles titles and has advanced to the quarterfinals or further in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, including the and at 2012 finals and 2013 semifinals at the French Open where she is currently the No. 5 seed, and a semifinal appearance at the 2012 US Open. Errani is coming off her best event of the season last week in Rome where she reached the finals before falling to World No. 1 Serena Williams.

Bouchard, a 20-year-old Canadian, will be making her first visit to New Haven. She is enjoying a strong 2014 campaign that includes an appearance in the semifinals at the Australian Open, followed by WTA success at Acapulco, where she reached the quarterfinals, and semifinal appearances in Charleston and Portugal. The three Top 20 stars join the tourney's defending champion, Simona Halep of Romania, in the 2014 New Haven field. Halep, who committed to the tournament earlier in the week, is currently ranked No. 4 in the world and the highest-ranked player to announce she will play in the Elm City to date.

In addition, men's tennis will once again be part of the New Haven mix with two exhibition matches between major stars. On Wed., Aug. 20, hometown Connecticut's favorite son, James Blake of Fairfield, will take on four-time Grand Slam titlist Jim Courier. On the next night, Blake will challenge Andy Roddick. Both Courier and Roddick are former No. 1-ranked players, while Blake peaked at No. 5.

Both men's matches will be played following the 7 p.m. WTA feature match. Each will a be best of three sets affair, with a super tie-break in effect for the third set.

The New Haven Open, a WTA event that is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series, will take place from August 15-23, 2014 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. Ticket packages are now available offering fans up to a 27 percent discount. Daily tickets will go on sale June 9.
