The countdown to the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi has begun, so there’s a particular edge to the excitement at Dartmouth Skiway in Hanover as it opens for its 56th season on December 14, 2013.

Owned by Dartmouth College and home to more than 100 All American skiers, the Skiway is open to the public and is located just 20 minutes from the classic college town of Hanover and the iconic Dartmouth Green. Over the years, Dartmouth has produced 63 Winter Olympics medalists. Another three are currently in training at the Skiway. Because winter sports are a regular part of the PE program for the college, it’s not unusual for students who have never seen snow before as well as families trying out the ski and snowboard school for beginners to be mingling with future Olympians around the fireplace in the stone-fronted McLane Family Lodge.

The Dartmouth Skiway opened on December 15, 1956 and now covers 107 skiable acres across Winslow Mountain and Holt's Ledge. There are 30 groomed trails, one Quad and two chair lifts and snowmaking covering 10.25 trail miles. Trails include 4 Double Black Diamond (13 percent); 4 Black Diamond (13%), 15 Blue Square (50%) and 7 Green Circle (24%). Boarders will find two park areas. The summit elevation is 1,943 feet and the tallest vertical drop is 968 feet
