New, as of August 18, 2010, is a website called Opencaching.us (http://www.opencaching.us/). In their own words, Opencaching.us provides "a free and open portal for all of those who are interested in the activity, or sport, of geocaching." Like the Geocaching.com website, this site offers listed caches as well as familiar attributes of the cache itself: coordinates, difficulty rating, terrain rating, Google maps, statistics, miles from registered user's coordinates, and the ever-handy Send to GPS button. While it lacks the Driving Directions feature, it does have an interesting additional feature: links to other caching sites ("also listed on" link). Also, this site give fellow cachers the opportunity to review geocaches, instead of just logging their finds.
Opencaching.us also has international counterparts in the Czech Republic, Germany, Latvia, Japan, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. This site serves as a new companion website to Geocaching.com, when searching for local caches to an area.
Upon searching for Opencaches near Louisville, Kentucky, this Examiner only found a few caches in Ohio, all listed by the same cacher. Tennessee was the next in proximity to the Louisville area, for having Opencaching entries. However, this "lack of L'ville cache" could serve as an opportunity: an opportunity for someone in the Louisville geocaching area to be the FIRST to post on Opencaching.us!
Grow, grow, grow...then go, go, go geocaching!
