On Memorial Day from 8:00a.m. – 1:00p.m., Excelsior Commons Park will be filled with brave souls willing to workout for a good cause. As part of Memorial Day Murph 2014, a team of former US Navy SEAL’s will parachute into the park. Participants will have the opportunity to complete “Murph”, a workout made famous by the book and movie Lone Survivor, which traditionally consists of a 1 mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, and 300 squats, followed by another 1 mile run, while wearing a 40 lb pack.

Event honors Lone Survivor

Lone Survivor was written by Marcus Latrell, the “lone survivor” of a SEAL Team. On June 28, 2005, Luttrell and SEAL Team 10 were assigned to Operation Redwing, a mission to kill or capture Ahmad Shah, a high-ranking Taliban leader responsible for massive killings in eastern Afghanistan and the Hindu-Kush mountains. During the gunfight, Lt Mike Murphy realized their only option was to call for back up. He risked his own life, exposing himself to gunfire climbing to higher ground to enable communications to call for back up. All the SEAL’s were awarded the Navy Cross and Lt. Michael Murphy received the highest award, a Medal of Honor.

The book recently became a movie, hitting theaters on January 18th, 2014. Lt. Murphy, like most SEALs, was in amazing physical shape. He trained using the CrossFit methodology. His favorite workout was a 1 mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, and 300 squats, followed by a 1 mile run, while wearing a 40 lb pack This workout became known in the CrossFit world as “Murph”. CrossFit proudly supports all branches of military, especially SEALs. There are almost 10,000 CrossFit gyms worldwide, with nearly 3 million athletes using CrossFit as their main form of training.
