They say that legends never die. For centuries people have been searching for Bigfoot. According to Fox News published yesterday, there is little scientific evidence to support the claim that a big hairy creature lives in the woods. Facebook/FindBigfoot is the first social media forum to continue through with investigations of the creature’s existence. The network will be dedicated to collecting, curating and analyzing Bigfoot photos and videos.
The Facebook/FindBigfoot page reads, “We are not trying to prove that Bigfoot exists. It does in large numbers. We are interested in how they act and their morphology.”
Fox news writes, “The crowd-sourcing research community, which has more than 36,000 fans on Facebook, just released its list of the top 10 trending videos of the beast, alternately known as Sasquatch and the Abominable Snowman.”
The team at Facebook/FindBigfoot analyzes YouTube to determine the most popular videos. Chief video analyst Jack Barnes for the project states, “What’s interesting about the trending videos is some are relatively new, such as the Camper Video recorded in September 2012 and others like Marble Mountain and Twin Hemiplegic have been around for years. This shows the viral aspect of Bigfoot videos and how fans and researchers are revisiting older videos and comparing them to newer ones.”
Brief History of Bigfoot
According to Big foot Lives/com, “It is generally thought that Bigfoot is a recent addition to our mythology. Indeed the word ‘Bigfoot’ was first coined as late as 1958. However, in actual fact the idea of hairy Hominoids goes back long before then.”
Myra Shackley in her book “Still Living?, Yeti Sasquatch and the Neanderthal Enigma” argues, “The Wildman, in various manifestations, forms part of the culture and mythology of almost every society since records began.”
The earliest Wildman to appear in literature can be found in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The stories which are about 4000 years old were written on 12 clay tablets and were discovered in the Assurbanipal Library in the ruins of Ninevah. There is no evidence at all that the Epic of Gilgamesh was based on reality, but some do speculate that the stories were written around an actual king of the same name who lived in southern Babylonia, modern day Iraq. According to the story, Arura the Potter created the Wildman Enkudu from clay. He was shaggy with ‘hair that sprouted like grain’, and who ate with the gazelles and drank with the wild beasts at their waterholes.”
In 500 BC we have the hairy wild men from Libya, Greece and Rome. In Medieval times there were tails of half-human beast-men. In 986 we have the first North American discovery of beast-men by Leif Erikson who stated, were “horribly ugly, hairy, swarthy and with big black eyes”. Furthermore, Natives of American talk of Bukwas, or the wild man of the woods.”
Whether it is called Bigfoot, Yeti, Abominable Snowman, or Bukwas the legend lives on. For many the desire to proof its existence is strong.
