My, how the Atlanta underground club scene has changed in such a short period of time! First, The Shelter, home of the goth scene, closed on New Year's after four wonderful years. Then, "EDM headquarters" QUAD followed suit on January 4, announcing they were closing for an indeterminate amount of time due to renovations. The start of 2014 left both club-goers and event promoters alike with the same question: where's the party now?
This weekend, there are four great events that prove that Atlanta's underground club scene is alive and well, even with the loss of the two beloved venues While some of the upcoming events will take place at locations that are new to the scene, others are breathing new life into long established venues.
On Friday, February 21, a new event will take place at a new venue. Ascension is a brand new goth industrial night that will take place at Legend Cafe. Just barely OTP, Legend Cafe offers benefits you won't find at most ITP clubs: tons of free parking, a much larger space and later last call. Add to that seven pool tables with free play all night, a private playroom, and surround seating on plush leather couches, and you have an upscale venue with plenty of room to party and relax. The event comes to us from one of the original promoters of Phobia, so you know it's going to be a good night. DJs Lechter, Jennocide, and 313 will spin goth/industrial all night, and Oni of Ritual will be vending her Second Skin. (Note: Legend Cafe will also be the venue for the upcoming Ritual which was formerly held at The Shelter.)
Legend Cafe is located at 6259 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Doraville, 30360. Doors open at 10 p.m. and close at 4 a.m. The event is 18 and up. Cover is $10 for 21 and up before midnight, $12 after; and $12 for 18-20 all night. For more information, check out the Facebook event page.
Also on Friday, Atlanta Bass Wars presents Substance at Jungle. Atlanta Bass Wars has hosted events throughout Atlanta, but QUAD felt more like home to the popular EDM event. Although Jungle is established as a gay club, the former Chamber has long been embraced by their previous patrons from the goth and fetish scenes. Bringing Bass Wars to Jungle is sure to shake things up even more, and it will be great for the venue to get an even more diverse crowd through the doors. Atlanta Bass Wars presents Substance will feature DJs Knuckle Children, HPNTK, DeBroka, NuK, Trench, VORHEEZ, and DaddyDough. Hosted by Armanni Reign, this event is going to bass blast the doors off the place!
Jungle is located at 2115 Faulkner Rd NE, Atlanta, 30324. Doors open at 10 p.m. and close at 3 a.m. The venue is 18 and up, and cover is $10 before midnight, $15 after. For more information, check out the Facebook event page.
On Saturday, the party continues with Trashed #2 at MJQ. Hosted by DJ Silk Wolf, a former resident DJ at The Shelter, the second installment of the new monthly dance party will feature guest DJs Caz10 and Skooter along with MJQ Cafe Saturday night resident Taradactyl. According to the Facebook event page, Trashed aims to create a "discotheque experience in the spirit of the notorious Limelight & Studio 54." Glitz, glamour, and costumes are encouraged.
MJQ is located at 736 Ponce de Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, 30306. Doors open at 11 p.m. and close at 2 a.m. MJQ is 21 and up, and cover is $5 before midnight, $10 after. For more information, check out the Facebook event page.
Just a few months after their successful Mad Psyentists party at The Shelter, Archaic Revival returns Saturday night for Archaic Revival 5: A Night of Psychedelic Trance. To be held at Paragon 7 Studio, DJs Moksa, FLYNT, XB, and Treffen will provide the soundtrack for a night of transcendental dance and community. Vendors will include The Push Back Project, Transgenetik Designs, and artist Baruška A. Michalčíková.
