New environmental cleanup program slated for Hawaii’s harbors

There are very few highways in the state of Hawaii that have not been “adopted” by various volunteer groups with their pledge of maintaining a litter cleanup program throughout the year.

Now, following in those footsteps, Wikoliana Educational Excursions and Hawaii’s Department of Transportation have announced their partnership in establishing a statewide Adopt-a-Harbor program that will focus on the public access areas of the state’s commercial harbors.

Considered the first such program in the state – and perhaps the US – the first harbor being adopted is the Kalaeloa/Barber’s Point Harbor by the Goodwill Industries’ GED prep program for teens at risk called “Ola I Ka Hana” (To Live and Thrive By Means of Your Work). Goodwill Industries notes that an important part of this program is for students to learn the importance of giving back to the community where they live by participating in volunteer service.

Anyone wishing to join in kicking off the first Adopt-a-Harbor effort is asked to show up on Thursday, February 13 at 11 a.m. at the Barbers Point Commercial Harbor parking lot, on the right side just before the Marisco Shipyard, which is the program’s number-one sponsor. The address is 91-607 Malakole St., Kapolei, HI.
